Environment Sunday: 2nd June 2013

(Note – World Environment Day is 5 June every year)

This is the third year of the UN Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020

The Sunday nearest to World Environment Day is celebrated as Environment Sunday

Environment Sunday was first chosen by A Rocha as the first Sunday in June, (or the nearest Sunday to World Environment Day which is always 5th June .  Christian Ecology Link encourages its members and others to support Environment Sunday, either on this Sunday or any other day that may be more suitable to a particular local church’s situation.

If you plan to hold an Environment Sunday Service please let us (CEL) know and we can publicise it on the whatson page.

(For example St John’s Church at Ben Rhydding near Ilkley is focussing their service on 2 June at 10am on Care of the Marine Environment)

A Rocha has produced materials for Environment for several years.

This year’s material can be downloaded here

Special note for 2013

2 June is Environment Sunday.  In 2013 it is also: The Big Lunch.

So CEL encourages churches to celebrate Environment Sunday – on 2 June – or a suitable Sunday near by.

(not forgetting that that Creation TIme – 1 Sept to second Sunday in October – See below -is another opportunity to celebrate and Care for God’s Creation)

A Rocha states that it has chosen the first Sunday in June or the nearest Sunday to World Environment Day for Environment Sunday for three reasons:

    • The time of year – early summer is most suitable for outdoor events. Flowers, butterflies, birds and other wildlife are easiest to see and enjoy.
    • The Wildlife Trusts, a national network of country and regional trusts in Britain, promotes the first week in June as “wildlife week”. We strongly encourage churches to link up with their local Wildlife Trust and plan joint events – nature walks, practical working parties, or perhaps an interview with a Wildlife Trust officer in youur Conservation Sunday Service.
    • World Environment Day – the United Nations have declared June 5th as World Environment Day. In 2008 June 5th is the Thursday

Creation Time

Please note that Christian Ecology Link also encourages people to support “Creation Time“, the period between 1 September and the second Sunday in October by holding a service about the environment then. Resources for this are in the liturgies section of worship materials.

Creation Time is promoted by the European Christian Environment Network

AND by

Churches Together in Britain and Ireland C.T.B.I. which has useful material

(Note – World Environment Day is 5 June every year)
