The United Reformed Church (URC) has approved a proposal to sell its investments in fossil fuel companies at a meeting of its governing body on Tuesday. The resolution states that the URC should drop investments in companies involved in the extraction or supply of oil and gas by the time of its General Assembly in 2020, following its divestment from coal and tar sands in 2015. It further encourages other URC Synods and churches to follow suit. Another motion passed updated the URC’s environmental policy to endorse a target for the UK of “net zero emissions by well before 2050. More detail and commentary can be found on the Bright Now website

David Shreeve writes:        I am writing with news of this year’s Season of Creation – 1 Sept to 4 Oct. A new international committee has been formed which includes the Bishop of Salisbury to help promote and develop initiatives.  For our part we have commissioned a new Song for the Season of Creation. There are a number of arrangements available to suit singing groups of all types and one for congregations so everyone can join in.  Hopefully we can get a large number singing on Sunday 1 Sept to launch the season.  Others may p refer to sing the song at other times  – during harvest services for example.  The song will be launched on 26 May (Rogation Sunday) to give plenty of time to learn and practice it.  We would very much welcome videos of groups singing the song to help others learn it. Please do all you can to promote the song and let us know of any plans to use You can see the service planned using the song at St Brides Church, Fleet Street, London and a video will be displayed after 26 May
