GC Press Release: Christians challenged to help shape a new economy

Christians will come together in Sheffield in November to help build a movement for a fair and sustainable economy. The charity Green Christian has put out a call for activists, campaigners and ordinary Christians to join a day of discussion and planning called The Big Workshop.

Part of the charity’s Joy in Enough campaign, The Big Workshop will explore a Christian vision for a fair and sustainable economy, build alliances, and lay foundations for a wider movement. The day will include conversations in a café table format, where groups will discuss the pressures of consumerism, and how faith can inspire us to live different and more joyful lives.

The event will take place on Saturday the 18th of November at Victoria Hall, Sheffield.

Tony Emerson, coordinator of Joy in Enough, explains the goals of the campaign:

“Our aim is to help bring about a society which prioritises well-being and the common good, in which all have enough and no one too much, and which stays within the boundaries of nature. We are working with the churches and with civic society organisations to achieve this aim, and we’d invite anyone with an interest to come and join us at The Big Workshop.”

Joy in Enough content editor Jeremy Williams adds:

“There are lots of Christian organisations and projects looking at reforming our economy in various ways. So far it hasn’t filtered through to a grassroots movement, but we think the church can be a huge force for good. There is so much in our faith to draw on to help shape a society that is good for people and good for the earth.”
