Actions you can do from your sofa:
Let your MP know of your concerns for environmental legislation and the Paris agreement, following the Brexit vote. Hope for the Future have a nice template letter than you can use as a basis.
2. Watch and share the beautiful and moving 5 minute video ‘I wish for you’ by Michael Morpurgo, with Jeremy Irons and Maxine Peake.
This is part of The Climate Coalition‘s Show the Love campaign.
3. Ask your church to divest the rest:
The Methodist Church and the Church of England have voted to divest from tar sands and coal but are happy to stay cuddled up to oil and gas, saying that engagement with these companies is the answer. We don’t think that is a Christian thing to do. Brightnow is working to help us talk to our churches about this – including this brilliant paper that well and truly squashes the engagement argument.
4. Pray and Fast for the Climate was set up to encourage UK Christians to pray and fast on the 1st of each month for a meaningful and just global climate agreement at the UN climate talks. Since we have achieved that, sort of, we now have to pray the rhetoric into reality!
5.
Tearfund has a campaign called Ordinary Heroes. The current campaigns within it are: Stir up Suppers, Switch your energy and Eco Church.
6. “The Big Shift” campaign is for churches, Christians and others to quicken the pace for getting out of fossil fuels. This includes encouraging governments and institutions to move our money out of investments into coal and into cleaner energy, plus lots of suggestions for individual and local action.
Go to the website www.christianaid.org.uk/bigshift to email your bank asking them to clean up their cash!
7. Switch your church or home to renewable power
I think this excellent scheme is still going. My church, St John’s Hartley Wintney, has switched both electric and gas to renewable energy. It is very easy and clear – you get a quote, send it to your church council to make the decision, and then make the switch!
Actions that involve going somewhere:
1. Get your church to meet with your MP
Mobilise your church community to ask your MP to respond your community’s concerns for environmental legislation and the Paris agreement, following the Brexit vote. Hope for the Future have all you need to get this organised.
The climate coalition is encouraging us all to take part in their action on climate change. We are to organise events to which we can invite our MPs, to show them that we care about the world and that we want politicians to act.
The best information on this is here.
3. Ask the church to divest the rest
Operation Noah’s Bright Now campaign is part of the Global Divestment Mobilisation happening 5th-13th May this year. Keep an eye on the Bright Now web site for resources on how to engage your churches this week!
