Green Church Award

Green Christian member, Staffan Engstrom, writes how Worchester Cathedral won an award

We were successful as a cathedral in the Church Times Green Churches Awards, with our programme Living Gently on the Earth, winning the Training and Education category against some tough competition. This programme was originally inspired by the work we did in launching the online workshops at Green Christian. Paul Robert and Clare Harker from the Cathedral, and I (Lay Canon at Worcester Cathedral) attended an awards ceremony in London on 26 September.

The 2024 Church Times Green Church Awards are organised jointly with the Church of England’s environment programme, the Methodist Church, the Salvation Army, and Eco Congregation Scotland. They are open to church groups and church schools of any denomination. There are seven award categories with the Training and Education award being for projects promoting understanding about some aspect of environmental action, or destruction, and its impact, either at home or on the international community. Prize: £1000.

Worcester Cathedral with its Eco Group applied to the National Lottery Community Fund in 2021 for support in delivering a programme to engage and train the community with workshops, a green fair, and eco-resources, and to this end was awarded a grant of around £8k, which included funding to cover Living Gently on the Earth as well as other environmental aspects. The funding gave confidence to develop the Living Gently on the Earth programme, which is the umbrella name for the resulting activities and events. The programme was established by the Eco Group in 2022 and has been going monthly for two years, covering a wide range of eco-related themes, activities, and events.

The best way to see a summary of what the Living Gently on the Earth programme is about is to watch the six-minute video, made to share with other churches and communities about how a programme like this really can make a difference. There have been some exciting developments since the video was made in the autumn, such as the debate between Worcester’s prospective Westminster MP candidates on the climate crisis during COP28.
