IPCC AR6 report

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – the United Nations group responsible for climate science, known as the IPCC – has just released a crucial report assessing our climate. What they say makes uncomfortable reading.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the Working Group’s report was nothing less than “a code red for humanity. The alarm bells are deafening, and the evidence is irrefutable”

Looking around the world, we already know that we are almost out of time to keep the goal of limiting the warming of the Earth to 1.5°C alive. But now we have the scientific and governmental consensus to back this up.

We are now armed with the incontrovertible science to support our call for radical action and ambitious commitments from the countries that produce the most greenhouse gases. In this year of UK leadership of COP26, the UK must take the lead.

Our government must now accept the climate crisis for the emergency it is, and admit that current incoherent policies are not enough. They need to start serious public engagement, stop the Cambo oil development, set up carbon pricing and abide by their commitments for loss and damage, adopting the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill into legislation.

The reality of climate change can be overwhelming, and it’s easy to stick our heads in the sand and try to ignore it. Instead, let’s ask ourselves what the Lord requires of us at this time. We must simply seek justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God.

Please join us in doing the following:

Pray – we need to lament all that is lost and pray for a miracle – read our Theological Reflections on COP26 and get ideas from our Pray for COP26 page

Talk – we need to break through the denial – let’s talk to our family, friends and colleagues, and share social media posts about the report, encouraging people to act. Why not hold crisis talks at our churches on Sunday 22nd August.

Act – we cannot allow our government to have any doubt that the we want urgent science-based and moral action on climate – go to our ‘What can I do for COP26?‘ page for ideas
