The government is in the process of consulting the public on whether to end new drilling for oil and gas. Operation Noah, Christian Climate Action, Christian Aid, Laudato Si Movement, the Student Christian Movement, Tearfund, Just Love, Eco-Congregation Scotland and Green Christian are joining together with Uplift, the group behind Stop Rosebank, to use this moment to help our government listen to science and justice and to end fossil fuels in the UK.

How to get involved:

1.Watch our video made on 6 February that gives us all the information we need to help us understand and participate in this campaign.

Bishop Rosemarie Mallet gives the Christian background and Suzi Shingler and Lauren MacDonald present the campaign. The event is chaired by Lorna Gold, the incoming Executive Director of the Laudato Sí Movement. Green Christian’s Churches Project Officer, Melanie Nazareth, explains what we can do as Christians to support the campaign.

2. Our No Faith in Fossil Fuels Ash Wednesday service at St John’s Waterloo, starting at 11am

A simple service of reflection, repentance and hope with ashing. This is an opportunity to connect our traditional Ash Wednesday observance with the harm that our reliance on fossil fuels is causing. Here’s the Order of Service.

Our Ash Wednesday service will be followed by:

3. Our 24 hour Ash Wednesday vigil outside DESNZ, starting at 12 noon

Vigil practicalities. All you need to know to join us – for 10 mins or 24 hours!

Why not invite people in your church to come along with you?

Pray and vigil in your own community

No Faith in Fossil Fuels Ash Wednesday Service.

Please download our Order of Service to adapt to use in your own church. You are welcome to take a prayer or two to add to your usual Ash Wednesday events, or run the whole service. This folder has the Order of Service and also links to the music.

Vigil

We have a folder with all you need to hold a vigil outside your MP’s office or in your town centre to pray for and witness to your need for our country to do the right thing on new oil and gas. The folder will include

Online prayer

We have set up a Zoom prayer room for all who would like to join in our 24 hour prayer vigil from the comfort of their own homes.

At the beginning of each hour climate issues in a different part of the world will highlighted followed by silent prayer. You can join the prayers at any time, and for any length of time, between 12 noon the 5th and noon on the 6th March. Your Zoom registration will work for any time within the 24 hours – you do not need to pick a time or tell us when you will be there.

I thought we had already won this one! But if we haven't, lets make sure we do. The most important thing we can do - in FACT THE ONLY IMPORTANT THING WE CAN DO IS TO STOP BURNING FOSSIL FUELS NOW! So obviously that means no new oil and gas!
