Season of Creation and Prayer for COP28

It’s hard to know what to do about the COP28 Climate Conference in Dubai. We know that it will be hobbled by big oil lobbyists and short-termist governmental perspectives. Despite this, we must call on Christians and others of good will to amplify the voices of those even now being immiserated by climate change. And we must pray.

Morning prayer

At 8am every morning during COP28, from 30 Nov to 12 Dec, there will be 10 minutes of prayer and reflection, focusing on the theme of the day. This will be on Zoom and led a team from Green Christian.

Season of Creation

Although not specifically on COP28, the Season of Creation, 1 Sept to 4 October 2023, is a good time to start focusing on the state of God’s world and praying for its healing. Do visit the Season of Creation website for all you need to “Let Justice and Peace Flow” this creation season. The Celebration Guide below has a beautiful ecumenical prayer service at the end, beginning on page 22.

Eco-Congregation Scotland has put together a plethora of resources for Season of Creation, including prayers, sermon notes and videos:

Harvest

Many churches still celebrate Harvest. This is also a good time to make connections between the food we need to live and the capacity of our world to continue to sustain that food. Have a look at the link to our Harvest resources below.

Is the COP28 prayer just for Green Christian members or can it be promoted more widely?

Mrs Ingrid Jessica Riches:

Perhaps time for solemn reflection on God's gentle rule. Species Remembrance Service' coinciding with All Saints Day we must hear the will of God, and the cry of those suffering who have not created this CO2 catastrophe.
