CHRISTIAN ECOLOGY LINK PRESS RELEASE 25 APRIL 2012 ROGATIONTIDE AND LAMBING SERVICES THIS MAY IN THE UK ROGATION SUNDAY – THIS YEAR ON 13 MAY An opportunity to pray in the open air - in nature - The environment is vital for our survival. Rogation Services offer an opportunity to pray for this. CEL has compiled a list of Rogation Services in the UK SUMMARY- * Up to date list of Rogation Services and similar throughout UK www.christian-ecology.org.uk/rogation.htm * What is a Rogation service * Lambing Services; Pet Services; Salt Services - Yes SALT! * Quote by Bishop of Bradford --------------------- ROGATION SERVICES:- In a Rogation Service people walk round the village or neighbourhood and stop with a prayer, reading and hymn at the stream, meadow, farm, field of wheat or relevant location and ask God’s Blessing for the coming year on the crops. In some places the village bounds are beaten. (i.e. a walk round the parish boundary). Rogation Sunday – is always the Sunday before Ascension Day. The name comes from the Latin “Rogare” – to ask. Judith Allinson, Christian Ecology Link’s Web Editor says "It is a brilliant service – just “being” in the open air, under the blue (or cloud filled) sky, hearing the birds (and the traffic), in contact with the real world: praying about things we can see hear and smell..." Bishop Nick Baines of Bradford says:- "Nearly three thousand years ago a poet (psalmist) wrote, 'The earth is the Lord's and everything in it.' This is the starting point for any Christian, and we celebrate God's good creation with joy. Rogation services encourage us to enact this gratitude and celebration." According to the page on the CEL website which highlights some Rogation services, Yorkshire is a stronghold for Rogation Services. LAMBING SERVICES Lambing services feature in the Yorkshire Dales - where the main crop is sheep. These are often held on the farm itself – such as Newhouses Farm in Horton in Ribblesdale (6 May) and Wenningside Farm near Clapham Station (Clapham in Yorks 20 May) On 6 May there will be a Lambing service at the picturesque church of Hubberholme in Upper Wharfedale led by Nick Baines, Bishop of Bradford. He says: ROGATION AND PET SERVICES Expanding on the theme of Rogation, Clapham and Austwick are holding 'Rogation and Pet' services on 13 May. Settle Methodist Church is holding its café service on the theme “All Creatures Great and Small” SALT SERVICES In Cheshire they encourage churches to have a 'Salt' Service http://www.saltoftheearth.btck.co.uk/ and http://www.chester.anglican.org/page_pdt.asp?Page=627 For a list of all the services see www.christian-ecology.org.uk/rogation.htm RESOURCE MATERIAL for running a service is available at http://www.churchofengland.org/media/41161/tsagyear.pdf
