What action should we be taking on Biodiversity in 2022?

We need to campaign and act to save nature / biodiversity.

The planetary boundary figure of 2009 on the right shows how important biodiversity loss is.

“But it is such a diverse topic” you may say.

Here are ideas raised and after at the recent Green Christian workshop on this topic. (See video of workshop on youtube here or skip to the the part where Judith talks about the rainforest fund here)

Here are Upcoming Parliamentary Bills to be aware of.

If we have better laws it will help the environment in one fell swoop, (compared to small actions such as spending time recycling envelopes, or buying beautiful greeting cards to raise money for the rainforest)

 1. The Environment Bill

This is coming into its final steps and will set binding targets for nature recovery. It is in the House of Lords. Where the House of Lords is making recommendations. Third reading in Lords is 13 October 2021.

When it comes back to the House of Commons, the House of commons will try and water it down.

Ask you MP “Please vote for amendments that will strengthen it”

2. November COP26 Climate Conference

This is about climate – but also includes nature based solutions.

Peat bogs:

1.- Stop burning them  – Parliamentary petition now closed
2.- Stop bagging them for peat in garden centres  – Take action ourselves

RSPB : https://www.rspb.org.uk/our-work/policy-insight/agriculture-and-land-use/farming-land-use-and-nature/peatlands/

UK land and soils  – currently our management is adding to the carbon dioxide production -Manage soils to store carbon instead:

(Judith-WebEditor writes:- I thought UK Peat bogs were wonderful – they contain such a vast amount of UK’s stored carbon – But I discover that only 20% of them are actively growing (and storing carbon) faster than they are releasing carbon to the air by (BBC/CPRE) (CEH Peat Factsheet)

  • drying out
  • or being blown away,
  • or being drained
  • or being planted with trees

 3. Green paper on Nature Bill.

Parliament – A group has been established to come up with a green paper in November about a nature bill. This will be replaced by a white paper and there will be a new law about nature in 2023. We will need to respond to this in November and make sure that the bill will improve nature and not undermine it.

The Planning bill is coming out in October to November with implications for wildlife.

 4.  Churchyards:

Excellent series of webinars here: https://www.caringforgodsacre.org.uk/get-involved/attend-a-session/webinars/ – Wednesdays 2pm Starting 13 Oct

5.  Plus please write a letter to your MP about Green Christian’s Why Faith Matters at COP26

This visual presentation is about both climate and nature. https://greenchristian.org.uk/why-faith-matters/ Link to sample letter

Please, how about - among other things(!) - we use the occasion of CHRISTMAS,which everyone is crazy about (regardless of their faith/no-fath status), to promote a love of our ecosystem? I've written a set of 12 "Carols for the Earth" that are all about biodiversity, free and notated for all. Here's a verse example from "To Stand for All Creation" based on "Adeste Fideles":TO STAND FOR ALL CREATION 1. O come, all ye faithful, fearful yet courageous! O come, we as one brave-hearted our fate must face! Come we together, resolute through peril, to stand for all Creation (3x) Earth's hope to hold!2 Grow, trees and bushes, flowers, grasses, rushes! Grow from rich soil to keep Earth breathing anew! Your fruits do feed us, your deep roots so need us to stand for all Creation (3x) Earth's hope to hold!3 Blow, breath of Heaven, wind of transformation! Blow 'way all currents stifling Life's precious air! Breathe through our body, Breath of Life and Spirit to stand for all Creation (3x) Earth's hope to hold!4 Flow, precious water, balm of Terra Mater! Flow o'er the earth, rejoin the great sea of Life! Rivers feed oceans, birds and fish us motion to stand for all Creation (3x) Earth's hope to hold!5 Whale, bear and raptor, all Man's kin in Nature! Humbly concede we now our shared earthly home! One, all, and Nation, vowing reparation to stand for all Creation (3x) Earth's hope to hold! This and 11 more can be found at https://www.carolsfortheearth.com/, with sheet music in 4-part harmonies.
