A prayer of atonement

One of our members wrote this prayer to be used during a church service in Lent. Do adapt for your own church or prayer time.
Father in Heaven,
When our life on Earth ends, we all hope we will be at your side in heaven, a place in our minds of peace and glory, beauty, and bounty. Dear Lord, you must wonder why we long for another heaven, when you have already given us heaven here on Earth.
You formed for us a place of sun and wind, rain and the stars, vegetation of every kind, flowers, and fruits, animals and birds, and the mighty oceans with fishes and whales, dolphins, and coral. The mountains and forests and trees too many to count. You will ask “Why do you long for heaven when I have created this for you on Earth? Now you look for another heaven when you have treated the one, I gave you so badly.”

For many species it is too late, for many sea creatures it is too late, for the ancient forests and peat lands, it is too late.
Father, we ask your forgiveness for our blindness of such beauty, here-now-free to all, and to share with our brothers and sisters throughout the world.
Give us the chance to atone, to beg your forgiveness. We know your love and mercy know no bounds.
Tomorrow is another day to begin anew, to see the joy in all you have given us, this Heaven on Earth. To do all we can to help the wildlife, seas and forests and to restore what we can and halt the decline of so much of your beautiful world.
We know Father, you will give each of us the strength to do as much as we can in every way and to work for your glory and be thankful and full of your love for this wondrous gift-heaven, here, now for us all.
Merciful Father accept these prayers for the sake of your son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
AMEN
