Responding to the Cry of the Earth

Help My Church Show Prophetic Leadership

  1. Ask for creation care to be a standing item on the church council agenda and the responsible person on the standing committee or main decision-making board
  2. Your church can sign up as a supporter of the CAN Bill and put a banner on the church railings. There are so many campaigns out there. This one encompasses climate, nature, trade, agriculture and really tells the truth about the Climate and Nature crisis and how the UK should respond.
  3. To support the call for a just global treaty to end fossil fuels, your church can sign the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Faith Letter and also endorse the initiative
  4. Commit to going net zero on carbon emissions (measure, reduce, switch to green energy and offset with climate stewards). Go for before 2030 to lead the way and respond appropriately to the UK’s historical leadership in climate breakdown. Some churches, e.g. the Church of England, have already committed to do this so this should be a job of the PCC and you should only need to remind them why they are doing it and help them along the way.
  5. Use church bells to raise awareness. For example on Earth Overshoot Day
  6. Sign Operation Noah’s Green Investment Declaration
  7. Agree an Ethical Purchasing Policy. The Just Money Movement have produced an excellent Ethical Buying Guide for churches to equip churches to take practical steps with their spending to shape a fairer, more sustainable world.
