MPs now know we want them to Act Now, Change Forever

Green Christian members were amongst the 5,000 people who descended on Westminster to ask their MPs to Act Now, Change Forever for climate and nature on Wednesday 9 July.

The Christian campaign brief helped the participants know what to say to their MPs and Green Christian’s recommended specific asks were for their MPs to sign the Climate and Nature Bill Early Day Motion and the Stop Rosebank Pledge.

Faith Space panel discussion

Catherine said, “Sadly my MP did not turn up. So I wrote a postcard to her. It was good to come down and spend an hour at the Christian Climate Action vigil then see people at the Green Christian stall.”

The Faith Space held a panel discussion between Canon Giles Goddard from Faith for the Climate, Amandeep Maur Khan from EcoSikhUK and Jonathan Wittenberg EcoJudaism.

Ruth Jarman came with three members of her church. “There was a wonderful buzz in Westminster Hall with so many groups from all over the country asking for the protection of God’s world.”

Meeting MPs in Westminster Hall

Robbie writes, “I’d only ever been to one Mass Lobby before and this one was better, mainly because The Climate Coalition had hired the QEII Centre across the road from the House of Commons for stalls and talks and general networking opportunities.

I looked after the stall for an hour and talked to enquirers. Being new to Green Christian, I thought I’d have trouble fielding questions. But I need not have worried. Most of the conversations were along the lines of when or whether people had seen or would see their MP. Sadly for some, they had turned up but their MP had not.

Our stall was in the section for faith groups. CAFOD, Operation Noah, Tearfund and many more were alongside us. In another section were the Co-op, the WI, numerous wildlife groups and other NGOs.

In the event, I did meet my MP. There were six of us, five Green Christians and one from Tearfund. The Mass Lobbyists had been primed with several questions. We did our best and our MP gave clear replies. We did ask her to sign the Early Day Motion for a debate and vote on the Climate and Nature Bill. Being a Labour landslide of 2024 newbie, she tends to vote with the whip on everything, and that seems to be why she had not signed the EDM and won’t sign. Still, I felt that our presence amidst the thousands of other Mass Lobbyists during the day must have had an effect.

If you get the chance to Mass Lobby your MP, it’s worth the visit. I’d say the outstanding impressions were the sense of being at one of the centres of power in the land, of being heard by your most significant representative and of enjoying the company of like-minded people who have made a commitment to be there.”

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be building the next stage of the journey together. From 13th-20th September 2025, we’ll be holding a nationwide Lobby Week – and you’re invited to be part of it. It’s your opportunity to meet your decision maker locally: in your community, on your terms. You’ll have a chance to continue the conversations we started, whether you were in Westminster or not. Faith bodies, aid charities, wildlife groups and the WI - what a diverse line-up! I wish our Government would recognise just how many people of good will are prepared to support them in taking decisive action on the environment and climate change.
