Stop Crucifying Creation

A response to Christian Climate Action’s call to “Stop Crucifying Creation”
Green Christian’s mission is to respond to the cry of the earth. Christian Climate Action’s challenge to the Church of England to “Stop Crucifying Creation” resonates with us and we encourage the CofE to be courageous, speaking up robustly for the earth as it groans under the mortal challenges humankind inflicts.
We applaud the CofE for “net zero by 2030” push, and for promoting responsible rewilding of churchyards and glebe. Further action in relation to finance and investments is called for.
We encourage the CofE to continue repenting of activities that “crucify” the earth, to use its influence to call on and to urge vested interests to align with God’s mission in serving and guarding the earth.
We echo Christian Climate Action’s timely call to prayer and confession, and we humbly offer the many Green Christian resources that can help members and congregations to do so.

Andrew Norman:
It’s shocking. I don’t think I have ever heard the term ‘crucifixion’ being used in this context: “Our world is being crucified by the Climate and Nature Crisis.”. Crucifixion makes us think immediately of Our Lord Jesus Christ and applying it to something we might think of being apart from Christ feels a bit irreverent. As church members our concern might be that the use of such language could well alienate many of our fellow church members and be counter-productive. But, obviously, the climate and nature crisis is shocking, and as CCA say in their Call to the Church: “Immediate, urgent action is needed to limit the damage that is occurring.” We do need to be shocked into action. Then this made me think about the Incarnation. We believe in Jesus being truly divine and truly human. Jesus showed God’s utter love for all people - and for all nature, and for all Creation. In God’s absolute love, although not a part of Creation, God is not apart from any of it. And that makes me think that ‘crucifixion’, shocking as it is, is exactly the right word.
