The Pagham Beach Picknic

Alison Blenkinsop, a Green Christian member, recalls the containers washed overboard in the Solent on 6th December 2025.

Tune: excerpt from The Teddy Bears’ Picnic

If you go down to the beach today
you’re in for a big surprise.
Behold, on shingle along the bay,
containers of massive size!
They fell off a ship whose mission it was
to carry fruit to Tesco, because
at breakfast time we do like to ‘ave a banana.

If you go down to the beach today
you’ll need an enormous sack,
for what went into the sea will weigh
far more when we get it back.
It came from places far overseas
with foreign foods to nourish and please:
at luncheon time we do like to ‘ave avocado.

If you go down to the beach today
remember this golden rule:
leave only footprints, take trash away
for the sea is already full.
Let’s use our LOAF when buying a meal,
keep food miles low, shop local with zeal,
and help reduce our craving to ‘ave a banana.
