Jesus Died to Save the Planet
Report by Colin Andrews
Towards the end of 2023 I became aware that our wider church network (around a dozen churches in the South) was planning a summer camp so I immediately made contact with our local leadership team to ask if I could help arrange a seminar on Creation Care. I had been part of planning a Leaders Training session for the same network on Creation Care the previous year when we were fortunate to have Ruth Valerio speak, so I hoped the summer camp would be an ideal opportunity to continue to raise awareness.
Unfortunately, Ruth was not available for this event so started my journey to find someone who would be available and willing. It seemed that the particular weekend of the summer camp was a popular one for weddings and other events so it was proving difficult to find a speaker. Then toward the end of June, when reading a post on CELink, I became aware of the booklet just produced by Paul Kunert with the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity entitled Jesus Died to Save the Planet. The content of the booklet seemed an ideal message for the Creation Care seminar. I found that Paul was already involved in CCA so there were connections already in place and it didn’t take much detective work to make contact to see if Paul would be available and willing.
After a short email dialogue Paul he expressed that he felt a prompting of the Spirit to make this happen, so it was not long before I was able to pass on Paul’s details to the summer camp organising team and let them take the task on from there.
It was great to finally meet Paul at the camp and assist with the seminar which was well received. A video recording of his talk and Q&A session was recorded and can be viewed below.
At around 41 minutes Paul makes some excellent suggestions on how to embed Creation Care at the centre of church life. I will be raising these with the our leadership team (some of whom attended the seminar)..
