Food Pledge for Season of Creation

Emissions and land use - CREDIT Ethical Consumer & Moonloft

Green Christian member Margaret Roberts has come up with an idea to encourage our church congregations in their eco-discipleship. This could be used in Season of Creation, or at any time in the year.

The idea is to briefly explain why and how we can live more gently on God’s earth by making a simple lifestyle choice. We only have the food pledge done so far, but we hope to get some others up soon.

Week 1 – Reduce Meat and Dairy

Meat and dairy accounts for around 15% of our total global emissions (many sources put it higher than this). Reducing the amount we eat is therefore crucial to curbing climate breakdown.

When you purchase meat and dairy try to ensure it comes from high animal welfare sources.

We liked the above graphic because it looks so much nicer than a simple graph – but this, below, is a better graph which includes more foodstuffs and shows cattle to be more clearly an issue.

I would agree about cows, put the emissions in terms of C02e which stands for equivalent, thereby including all emissions associated with fertiliser use to produce cattle feed etc. I woukd include Lentils/ Pulses, together with the highly processed Tofu.

I'm really surprised by this infographic as most sources would put cows as higher emitters of GHGs than sheep. They produce large amounts of methane, have a longer life cycle, require larger amounts of food, water and other resources. Or is this just looking at CO2 and ignoring other greenhouse gases? Would also be good to include milk on the infographic.
