Expose Shell

EXPOSED: oil giant Shell has known about dangerous climate change since the 1960s, according to uncovered confidential reports. But they buried the science to keep selling oil.
In solidarity and support of the lawsuit against Shell over a typhoon in the Philippines, Expose Shell have launched an online archive showing that the British oil major knew that burning fossil fuels could harm the climate as early as the 1960s.
Where do we stand, as Christians, on this sort of “naming and shaming”? When I first saw this campaign I felt uncomfortable. On the one hand, it is simple climate justice. The campaign is in support of the Filipino communities who suffered the devastation of Typhoon Odette, and is demanding justice and compensation through the courts. We have no choice, as Christians, as who who we stand with – we must stand with those who have suffered, rather than the powerful entities that have caused the damage. But the “naming and shaming”? Actually, if you think about it, the Bible is teeming with “naming and shaming” – from the Old Testament prophets to Jesus’ sharp rebukes to the Pharisees, particularly in their lacking of care for the poor and marginalised. And this campaign is targeting Shell, the institution, not a particular person, and Ephesians 6.12 can, I think, be applied to our times when the power of the fossil fuel industry is threatening life on earth:
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
The interactive site went live as Shell announced its latest third-quarter earnings of £10.8 billion, doubled from the same period last year.
