First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels – at Santa Marta

More detailed report here and here from Associated Press

The first conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels was held in Santa Marta in Colombia from 24-29 April. This had the support of nations who signed the Belém Declaration on Just Transition away from Fossil Fuels, a statement made at the conclusion of COP30 on the next steps in the fight for climate justice.

UK-based Quakers and other faith groups have held vigils outside the Colombian and Netherlands embassies on 24 and 29 of April, respectively. See here

This followed Faith for the Climate coordinating a letter signed by Green Christian and other faith groups, to Ed Milliband urging him to go to the summit. See here.

“The mood here in Santa Marta is euphoric,” said Tzeporah Berman, the founder and chair of the fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty initiative. “After years stuck in endless debates about whether to phase out fossil fuels, finally we are focusing on the how. We are no longer fighting for recognition of the problem, but creating solutions. It’s like watching a dam break – all that pent-up experience, knowledge and passion suddenly flowing into concrete ways to phase out dirty fuels. The hope is contagious.”
