The government is in the process of consulting the public on whether to end new drilling for oil and gas in UK waters. Operation Noah, Christian Climate Action, Christian Aid, Laudato Si Movement, the Student Christian Movement, Tearfund, Just Love, Eco-Congregation Scotland and Green Christian are joining together with Uplift, the group behind Stop Rosebank Campaign, to use this moment to help our government listen to science and justice and to end fossil fuels in the UK.

At a zoom workshop in February Suzi Shingler and Lauren MacDonald from Uplift presented their campaign to stop new oil and gas in the UK. The event was chaired by Lorna Gold, the incoming Executive Director of the Laudato Sí Movement. The Bishop of Croydon, Rosemarie Mallet gave the Christian background. She referred to the fifth mark of mission which states the Church believes in caring for the Earth and protecting God’s people. Bishop Rosemarie spoke movingly of how “the Bible teaches us to seek justice and care for our brothers and sisters, including our neighbours across the world. We cannot do that without calling for an end to fossil fuel projects which destroy their land and their livelihoods and contributes to extreme weather events which unfortunately affects the majority world”. You can watch the recording here.

On Ash Wednesday the same coalition of Christian environmental and development organisations are holding a simple service of reflection, repentance and hope with ashing. The Service will take place in St John’s Waterloo Church, London, starting at 11am on Wednesday 5 March. This is an opportunity to connect our traditional Ash Wednesday observance with the harm that our reliance on fossil fuels is causing. All are welcome to attend.

After the service there is a 24 hour vigil outside the offices of the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) in Whitehall starting at 12 noon.
