Major UK Churches and Christian Organisations Unite to Launch a Call to Action on Climate and Nature

(London, Thursday 23 April 2026) A coalition of the UK’s major church denominations and Christian organisations have today launched a Call to Action, calling on churches to host community screenings of the newly released People’s Emergency Briefing film.

The 50-minute film, the People’s Emergency Briefing, premiered in April 2026, presents the latest evidence on the climate crisis in an accessible format and features interviews by leading experts with reaction by members of the public and celebrities.

The group backing the screening of the film represents over 22,000 churches and includes the Church of England, the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales and the Joint Public Issues Team of the Methodist Church, the Baptist Union and the United Reformed Church and charities Tearfund, CAFOD, A Rocha UK, Operation Noah, Laudato Si Movement, Green Christian, Christian Climate Action and Eco Congregation Scotland.

Churches are encouraged to host screenings and invite their local communities and MPs. Organisers behind the initiative are hoping that church buildings and other faith spaces will be a platform to unite people in awareness of the scale and threat of the climate and nature crisis and enable communities to discuss the issues raised and explore ways to take action locally

“The Church has historically played a vital role at times of national crisis, providing pastoral care and refuge while challenging the government on issues of justice and morality,” states the newly released call to action. “As Christians our concern is underpinned not just by the threat to our own interests but by core Christian principles of caring for God’s creation, Jesus’ command to love one another and responding to human need”.

The Right Reverend Bishop Graham Usher, Bishop of Norwich and Lead Bishop for the Environment in the Church of England, said:

“We are the first generation to see the effects of climate change and the last that can do anything about it. The People’s Emergency Briefing is a wake up call for all of us. The threat posed by climate change and loss of biodiversity dwarfs that of other crises and the public need to be informed so that together we can turn the situation around.

“All the major church denominations are highlighting the scale of the threat, the common desire to see the public properly informed, and calling the Government to lead and take urgent action.
“The Church of England has a clear role in caring for God’s creation and taking prophetic action. With a Christian presence in every community in England, I strongly encourage our churches, chaplaincies and schools to host screenings of this timely and important film.”

The Right Reverend Bishop John Arnold, Bishop of Salford and Roman Catholic Lead Bishop for the Environment, said:

“Our faith calls us to care for our ‘Common Home’ and we must study the signs of the times and take the action that is needed to repair our relationship with God’s creation. The People’s Emergency Briefing lays bare how serious the climate and nature crisis is, the significance of the threat to our common home and the impacts it will have on people’s lives, and the need to come together to respond to this emergency.

“Our faith compels us to speak up on matters of justice and morality and by joining this initiative we can play our part in calling for the government to take the action that is urgently needed. The Catholic Church in England and Wales has environmental leads in every diocese across the country and, with nearly 3000 churches, we will be encouraging as many parishes to screen the People’s Emergency Briefing as possible.”

Dr Nicola Brady, General Secretary of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, said:

“The positive response from churches to the invitation to host and facilitate engagement with the National Emergency Briefing reflects a deep concern with the ways in which climate breakdown is impacting our local communities and the whole of humanity.”

Prof. Mike Berners-Lee, Chair of the National Emergency Briefing, said:

“This film is for everyone, of every political and religious persuasion or none. It lays out essential information that all of us need to know. The People’s Emergency Briefing is designed to create a moment of national reckoning over the climate and nature crisis in the UK. We want it to be seen everywhere, from churches, mosques, synagogues and temples, to pubs, cinemas and village halls. And we want everyone to have a chance to discuss what it means to them.

“Cross-church support for this initiative is a tremendous step forward – and this is only the beginning of our efforts to create a societal tipping point towards the World War Two-scale action that we need.”
