Why are the arts valuable?

Why are the arts valuable? Surely, when we are dealing with something as vast and ungovernable as the environmental, pollution and extinction catastrophe that is befalling the earth, dabbling in paints and pastels and finding rhymes for climate is an inconsequential task? Shouldn’t we be putting all our efforts into saving the planet?
For most of us that is the really difficult, maybe impossible task. You and I feel powerless, lost in the 8 billion or so humans on the planet and our individual effect in our lifetimes seems negligible, or at least that’s what it feels like when you are putting the recycling out.
Helpless, we may feel, but we all have the power of prayer. And writing, especially the writing of poetry is a way of praying. Making art is the same; it is a conversation with God and as we cannot hide anything from God, it is an honest conversation.
Prayer, as I see it, is energetic connection with the Holy Spirit. Now that is powerful!
So, let us pray.
