Watch Anthea Lawson as she answers the question, “Is it our task to save the world?” – a talk and discussion about antidotes to the common pitfalls of activism and change-making.
Anthea is an author and campaigner. Her books How Not To Save The World and The Entangled Activist help people who want to change the world think about the psychological, spiritual and philosophical foundations of what they’re doing, what’s getting in the way, and how they can be more effective.

We watched this on Sunday evening. One thing occurred to me is that our activism goes along with a need to deal with guilt: am I doing enough? Is this the flip side to the saviour complex? I am failing to live up to being a saviour? I also recall one prominent earlier member of CCA talking about some of their activism as a penance. So how do we respond? It feels like there is no answer, maybe we just have to be aware of this and carry on. Actually, we considered praying as a response but ended up playing a game of Upwords while listening to 'Revolver' (Beatles) and 'Leonard Cohen Live at the Isle of White 1970'. We had a fantastic time, and perhaps found a hint that one answer to the saviour complex is plenty of play.
