Is it possible to have a vision of a world where money is used to shape a fairer, greener future for everyone?
The Christian Just Money Movement says:
What we do with money, how wealth is shared, including through our tax system, and how money is used by investors, banks, and companies, determines the kind of world we live in. As Christians, we know Jesus had lots to say about our use of money and that we are called to act justly and speak out for change.

Fossil fuel companies are responsible for significant environmental and social harm and have displaced entire communities. They have also caused more extreme weather alongside other negative impacts, and often worked behind the scenes to stop or delay climate legislation. Another Christian organisation, Operation Noah, ran a successful campaign to persuade church bodies to divest out of investments in fossil fuels. Many of the UK’s national and regional Church bodies have now divested. This reflects a growing recognition that investing in fossil fuels is now no more of an ethical investment than investing in tobacco, arms or gambling.
The World Council of Churches (WCC) has come up with
Ten Commandments of Climate-Responsible Banking!
They are calling on individuals, churches, and faith-based organisations to align their financial choices with climate justice and the well-being of future generations.
- Find out how much your bank invests in fossil fuels.
- Write a letter to your bank urging it to end investments in fossil fuels.
- Share Save Children’s Live: Responsible Banking Survival Guide.
- Take legal action to address your bank’s role in worsening the climate emergency.
- Consider switching your money to a greener bank.
- Learn if your pension is invested in fossil fuels.
- Check if your insurance is in fossil fuels.
- Consider investing with a values-based investor.
- Watch videos illustrating how financial decisions influence the climate emergency
- Move to a greener pension fund.

It is a moral duty of faith communities to protect God’s creation and act in solidarity with vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by the climate emergency. Churches have both spiritual and societal influence, enabling them to advocate for transparency, accountability, and ethical finance while responding to scientific warnings and the appeals of young people for climate solutions.
