The Lord went in front of them in a pillar of cloud by day, to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light, so that they might travel by day and by night. (Exodus 13.21)
In cloud and fire God is both hidden and revealed. By them God led the people of Israel out of slavery to their destiny; accompanied them in the wilderness; and sustained them in faith and perseverance. Saints and sages have had the courage to enter God’s cloud and fire, and been transformed.
In our time, cloud and fire tells another truth – that we are changing the earth’s climate and unleashing flood, drought, wildfire and brutal heat. The ecological emergency imperils every promise. Days of hope that we might safeguard a liveable planet lead to nights of anxiety, grief or despair.
This weekend we will accept the invitation of Scripture for our time, and embrace the truths both of God’s love and of the climate crisis. We will meet Christ who came to cast fire on the Earth and who will return on clouds at the end of time.
Join Very Rev Dr Frances Ward who will guide our weekend. After serving as Dean of St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Suffolk, Frankie wrote Like There’s No Tomorrow: Climate crisis, eco-anxiety and God (Sacristy Press, 2020), and now serves in parish ministry in Cumbria.
The retreat will also introduce Green Christian’s Borrowed Time programme and help to co-create a new project called ‘Cloud and Fire’, which is seeking to develop pastoral responses to climate grief and anxiety.
The weekend will cost £165 full-board, with a non-refundable deposit of £50 payable to secure a booking.
Cancellation policy: In the event of the retreat being cancelled or becoming unviable because of Covid-19 restrictions or other factors, Green Christian reserve the right if necessary to retain the £50 non-refundable deposit which will be payable to confirm a booking. However we would endeavour to negotiate with the venue and/or insurers an arrangement which permits full reimbursement. If you cancel for any reason Green Christian regrettably cannot undertake to reimburse your deposit.

Val:
Hi, After such a wonderful online weekend last year, (which proved a catalyst for our church registering as an Eco Church and getting its Bronze award), I had hoped that there would in future be a way for those of us who can't attend to take part live in some of the event. It is welcome that there will be some published materials at least - could you make recordings of some of the sessions available too? If not live, at least after the event?
Paul Bodenham:
Hi Rosie, we hope to publish materials afterwards based on the retreat.
Rosie:
I won't be able to attend, but will some of the sessions be available either live on-line or as a resource afterwards, please?
