Green Christian joins Global Call for Ocean Protection

Ahead of the first Global Review of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, we have joined more than 140 scientists, conservation and development organizations, Indigenous Peoples, local community representatives, ocean experts, young people, faith communities, and civil society leaders to call on governments to scale up and strengthen ocean protection and conservation, for people and nature.

The call says:

Protecting the ocean is a moral responsibility to the people who depend on it and to future generations.

Protect and conserve more of the ocean. Ensure protection is effective. And deliver 30×30 to support people and nature.

The global call comes as a new global survey of 20,000 people across 20 countries reveals widespread public demand for governments to accelerate ocean protection. The polling found that 95% of people say it’s important that areas designated for ocean conservation are effectively managed and genuinely protect marine wildlife and ecosystems, rather than being protected in name only.

The Right Reverend Graham Usher, Lead Bishop for the Environment for the Church of England, said:

“The ocean supports biodiversity, regulates climate, stores carbon, sustains global food webs, and provides critical genetic and biological resources. The Psalmist speaks of the seas containing “the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep”, yet in many places around the world humanity has lost respect for the seas in favour of an exploitative attitude. Protecting them is vital not only for ocean health but for the stability and well-being of the entire planet.”
