No Faith in Fossil Fuels Ash Wednesday Service
The No Faith in Fossil Fuels Lent Vigil launched on Ash Wednesday, with a beautiful service of Lament, Longing and Love at St John’s, Waterloo.
We were welcomed to St John’s by Canon Giles Goddard, and the service was led by Revd Helen Burnett, with contributions from Bishop Mike Royal, General Secretary of Churches Together in England, Dr Ruth Valerio, Global Advocacy and Influencing Director at Tearfund, Hannah Lonergan, on a gap year as a Faith in Action volunteer with the Columbans, Eva Rouffet, 14 years old and a member of the Salvation Army Territorial Justice and Reconciliation Youth Forum, and Bishop Martin Gainsborough. The music was a wonderful mix of reflective modern songs, led by Engage Worship, and the very best of traditional hymn tunes with powerful new words, led from the gallery by members of the Salvation Army band.
Here’s the service sheet and here is the list of links to the music etc.
The service ended with an ashing ceremony in the garden.
Jonathon Porritt, Green Christian Patron, said, “So many continue to put their faith in the old world of endless economic growth powered by fossil fuels. The future can be so much more positive than this – but only if people of faith step up now and bear witness, in action, to a greater truth based on justice, compassion and personal responsibility. Please support the vigil.”
The day continued with a time of music and silence in Parliament Square before the official beginning of the ten day vigil by Carriage Gates of Parliament.
The following day NGO leaders from Christian Aid, Tearfund, CAFOD, JPIT, A Rocha and others took an hour’s slot together. Our board member and treasurer, Eleanor Orr, represented Green Christian.
Do join us in prayer over the next ten days:
